St. Joseph’s college affiliated to Kannur university started functioning in the year 2005 as an educational venture of Kannur diocese. Dept of physical education was not there at the beginning as a separate dept. Teachers from other departments who had interest in the field of sports inspired and trained students, in an amateur way though, to participate in the university level matches. Cricket and Football were the only events participated by the students during the period.
The college teams were runner up for two times in ‘C’ zone competitions during this period. A separate department for physical education was set up to address the sports skills development of the students in the year 2014. Here after students competed in all events in the university level. The college was runner up in the ‘C’ zone football championship five times. College cricket team won ‘C zone championship in 2019 for the first time in the history of college. Moreover, college teams wrested the university championship in 2019 shuttle badminton women’s team event. An alumnus, Shahal Abdul Samad, the celebrated midfielder of Indian football team with a promising international career, had been indicted into the University team when he was a student of St.Joseph’s College. Lajesh . K, the Head of the Dept of Physical Education takes keen interest in spotting potential students and giving scientific training to strengthen their performance and excel in their sports career.
